Media Release - Busines Retention & Expansion Program

The Town of Carnduff & Rural Municipality of Mount Pleasant No. 2 Economic Development Office in partnership with the Saskatchewan South East Enterprise Region (SSEER) is launching a Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Project starting this month. The Town of Carnduff & Rural Municipality of Mount Pleasant No. 2 Economic Development Office is aware that the future sustainability of our community is based upon existing businesses and their success. A BR&E program is designed to identify, communicate with and help meet the needs of local businesses.

The BR&E project involves in-person business meetings with business owners or executives. Their input will help the local economic development organization identify business opportunities, challenges and realities of doing business in the province and immediate area. All individual business information shall be kept in the strictest confidence. Consolidated data collected during the BR&E project will be used to identify/address immediate issues as well as plan future economic development activities.

Specifically, the objectives of the BR&E project are to:
  • Identify the needs, concerns, and opportunities of existing businesses in order that, where appropriate, local action can be taken to response to the businesses' needs or development opportunities
  • Learn of the future plans of the area's local businesses with respect to expansion, relocation, an retention and review where assistance can be provided
  • Access the area's business attitude and develop an effective means of communicating with businesses
  • Actively engage local stakeholders in economic development

The current opportunities for growth in southeast Saskatchewan are unprecedented. We endeavour to place Carnduff and area in a favourable position to take full advantage of existing and future opportunities. A well orchestrated BR&E project is one of the most effective tools in increasing community capacity and fostering sound economic development initiatives.

Service Best Training

We were fortunate to have hosted a Service Best training workshop in Carnduff yesterday. We had a total of 30 participants from various businesses and a variety of communities. We had 11 businesses represented from Carnduff, which was great to see.

Service Best is a nationally accredited Customer Service training program. The workshop addresses how to give your best service, knowing your customers and the different types you may have, service recovery and communication including dealing with unhappy customers, the importance of having a Service Best Attitude, what service professionals do and a little bit of everything in between.

It was a very valuable workshop that left everyone with ideas of what they implement into the workplace to increase the level of service they provide to their customers and co-workers.
For more information on this program, please contact the office at 482-3503.

A little something to think about...........
How people interpret the true meaning of what you say is done through words, body language and tone and breaks down as follows:
Words = 7%
Body Language = 55%
Tone = 38%

This entertaining and interactive workshop looks at the theory behind excellent customer service and provides useful tools to assist in making customers' experience positive and memorable. It also provides an easy-to-use strategy for service recovery when difficult situations occur.

Saskatchewan South East Tourism Association and Saskatchewan South East Enterprise Region are subsidizing this upcoming Service BEST workshop. So Just How is Oil Found and Produced?

Living in Southeast Saskatchewan we know all to well the implications of the oil and gas industry on our region. This industry continues to be one of our main economic drivers. I was recently forwarded an email link to the following website www.northernoil.com/drilling.php. The site has a brief 5 minute video explaining the process of drilling a horizontal well and putting it into production. It is from a U.S. based company so please keep that in mind, but for those of us who don't understand the complete process of drilling a well, this is very interesting! Enjoy!

Jack McFarlane - SUMA Honourary Membership Award

I had the pleasure of attending the SUMA (Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association) convention earlier this week. This was a vary valuable experience with some very informative information.
At the President's Banquet Tuesday Evening I had the privilege of attend and to honour former Mayor Jack McFarlane as he received an award under the Honourary Membership category. Awards are granted to elected officials throughout the province to recognize their long-term dedication to, and involvement in, their local communities. The recipients are unique individuals who demonstrate leadership in their communities and who strive for an improved quality of life. Their generous contributions of time and talent have strengthened their local governments.

Below is the insert honouring Jack:
The Town of Carnduff has been fortunate to have Jack involved in numerous capacities over the years. Born and raised in Carnduff, Jack has always been willing to contribute his time as a volunteer with community organizations, minor sports, boards and business groups.
Jack's civic responsibilities began in October 1988 with his election as councillor. In October 1997, feeling he had the time and passion that one needs to take that next step, Jack was elected as Mayor of Carnduff, a position he held until December 2008 when he made the decision to relinquish his mayoral duties.
Community progress and community pride have been and continue to be Jack's main objectives for the residents of Carnduff.
Jack has been very involved in economic development committees, joint-working committees with the RM of Mount Pleasant as well as the Regional Health Board. Jack has always been a vocal supporter of SUMA and in the SUMA Board's efforts to make a unified voice on behalf of all urban municipalities when dealing with carious issues at the provincial level.

Congratulations Jack!

Welcome to 2010!

Wow, we are now into 2010 and what is promising to be another busy year in our community!

First off I would like to take a moment to reflect on a couple of the exciting moments and highlights of 2009. We had the building a number of commercial buildings including shops by Southline Inspections, JP Plumbing & Heating and Bill Smith Construction. We also had the completion of services to 6th Street West which means an addition of 12 residential lots. Phase 1 of the Carnduff Swimming Pool Project was completed meaning an addition of the fantastic toddler pool. We hosted a number of events including a couple of Provincial Ball Tournaments, True Grit Team Roping and a well attended Street Dance. CTV Broadcast Live the News at 6 from our Memorial Park in September as part of their Home Town Tour! We also had a number of businesses celebrate big anniversaries. Unfortunately North American Lumber experienced a bump in the road with a fire that devastated parts of the building, but on the positive side, they are in the process of rebuilding those areas. Those are just a few of the highlights from the past year that come to mind when thinking about 2009!

Onto 2010....what will it bring?
The Town of Carnduff & R.M. of Mount Pleasant have signed the contract for a new Health Clinic that will be located at Borderline Housing. Doors are to open in 2010! Following the opening of the Health Clinic, there will once again be dental services offered to our community under the direction of Dr. Cameron Croll. Fundraising continues for the construction of Phase 2 of the Swimming Pool which will include the reconstruction of the main pool.
An upgrade to the water treatment plant is also in the works for this year.
There are also a number of annual events that will once again take place this year including:
Carnduff & District Music & Arts Festival - March 8-11
Carnduff & District Music & Arts Festival Highlights Concert - March 15
Country Classic Craft show - April 24
Annual July 1st Celebration - July 1
True Grit Team Roping & Barrel Racing - September 18-20
Country Christmas KickOff - November 18th
I am confident there will also be a number of other highlights as we move through 2010!

Wishing all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010!
