Day Construction Celebrates 30 Years!

Congratulations to Day Construction as they celebrate 30 years in the business!

A little history on Day Construction (taken from the 2007 Fast Trucking 50th Anniversay Book)

In 1952 Tony and his brother Willie bought a DC4 Cat. Tony only ran it when he wasn't working rigs or on the farm. Tony moved to the Carnduff area in 1956, leaving Willie the cat to run.

In 1979 Tony thought that having a cat to help move rigs was the only thing to do, so he purchased a D7E Cat from Cameron Collins and started to do lease work as there were no Cats around. Tony has increased his construction equipment to four DC8 Cats, five D7's, four D6's and one D9, graders, excavators and crapers.

In 1986, Willie passed away, leaving Tony the D4 Cat. It is in runnig condition and sits proudly in front of the shop.

Tony built one of the first hydraulic 6-way blades on the D4. (You should see it!)

Look At Our Population Grow!

Recently, Saskatchewan Health published the 2008 Covered Health Population Report. This report is not a census report as it only covers individuals whom are registered with a Saskatchewan Health Number as of June 30th.

According to the report, Carnduff has shown an increase in population from 1143 individuals in 2007 to 1176 in 2008...an increase of 33 individuals. An interesting point that I noticed in the report is that our largest demographic is ages 25 to 29 with 101 individuals and second largest demographic is ages 30 to 34 with 96 individuals.

The R.M. of Mount Pleasant also saw an increase of two individuals bringing the population to 322. The most popular demographic in the R.M. is the ages of 50 to 54 with 37 individuals and the ages of 55 to 59 with 32 individuals. The numbers in this demographic most definitely speak to the recent trends of aging family farms.

As an interesting breakdown, I split the report into five categories as follows with a breakdown of the number of individuals in each:
Under the age of 10 ~ 187 Individuals or 16% of our Population
Millenials
(Generation Y; Age 10-29) ~ 313 Individuals or 27% of our Population
Generation X (Age 30 - 44) ~ 247 Individuals or 21% of our Population
Baby Boomers
(Age 45 - 64) ~ 230 Individuals or 19% of our Population
Seniors (Age 65 and over) ~ 199 Individuals or 17% of our Population

This does indicate that we have a fairly young population in our community! If you would like to view the entire report, visit www.health.gov.sk.ca/population-stats

Daycare Welcomes 10 New Spots

The Carnduff Community Daycare opened it's doors in May of 2008 as a municipal ran daycare. It employs on average a staff of 9. At it's inception it was licensed for 30 spots, including six infant spots aged 3 to 18 months, 12 toddler spots aged 19 to 36 months and 10 preschool spots aged 37 month to 5 years and two school aged spots ages 6 to 12 years.

Over the course of the past year the daycare has had an overwhelming request for placement and with that demand a request for additional spaces was made. The Daycare recently received notification that they have been awarded ten additional preschool (aged 37 months to 5 years) spots. This is welcoming news to the daycare as well as many families in the area. Prior to the announcement, the Carnduff Community Daycare had 60 children from 41 families enrolled in the centre.

If you would like additional information on the daycare, you are welcome to contact Daycare Administrator Amy Wainman at 306.482.3345 or by email at carnduffdaycare@sasktel.net

Congratulations to the Carnduff Community Daycare on it's successful application for additional space!

Retire Your Ride

Recently I received some information on the "Retire Your Ride" program which is committed to improving air quality by recycling older, higher polluting vehicles. I would encourage you to visit their website at http://www.retireyourride.ca/ for more information!

A few interesting statistics taken from the Retire Your Ride Brochure:
~ In Saskatchewan there are over 294,000 1995 and older passenger vehicles on our roads!
~ Even a well maintained car that does not emit black smoke, and does not use much fuel, can still be a big polluter.
~ 75% of an average car's content by weight can be recycled.
~ 1995 or earlier model vehicles produce 19 times more pollution that of a 2004 or newer car.
